Do I need a Technical Author?

Most companies find that they need a Technical Author at some point to produce User Guides, Developer Guides, API’s, Help Text, and so on. In normal circumstances, companies who have different concentric development cycles can offer work to a full time Technical Author during all phases of development.
 
For the smaller, growth company with only one or two developments in production, this means the Technical Author is neither required nor used during a full development cycle. Therefore having one on staff can be a luxury.

This situation can lead to the following options:

• Hire a Technical Author and wonder what to do with them for 9 months of the year.
• Hire an untested contractor at a high rate, unsure if the job will be finished on time and to required quality.
• Write the copy yourself; which can be done, but can end up being ineffectively written, often using multiple voices, and can detract hugely from the quality of the end product.

Options which are financially and professionally untenable.
